Using a constructivist approach
Using the constructivist approach I would advise the teacher to know what exactly the objectives of the lesson are, then plan interesting and interactive activities that will keep children motivated to be engaged and stay on-task. The teacher should ensure that all the ICT tools that will be utilized in the lesson are available. The teacher should also provide opportunities and design tasks that require children to use the tools in the completion of their individual tasks, projects / group work.
Use of the Internet and the World Wide Web in education
The internet and the world wide web are both powerful tools through which much learning can be channeled. With the advent of these two entities the traditional method of teaching with chalk and talk is becoming obsolete.
The technological age is upon us. With it comes a range of technological devices that can be used to facilitate learning. When used effectively, these devices do not only enhance learning but they also get students to work with tools that they currently enjoy, such as the cell phones, Ipad, digital camera, etc.
Students these days are very technologically savvy, at times more so than their facilitators. Using ICT in teaching will simply make learning more interactive and meaningful for the students.
The onus is therefore on the teacher to begin using and incorporating tools such as the internet and the world wide web to motivate, sustain, facilitate and enhance learning.
What can educators do to ensure that the potential of the web is used effectively to support both their own learning and that of their students?
1. Teach students how to access authentic and relevant information that they can use in their work.
2. Setting up interactive websites which children can access to practice skills and gather information.
3. Setting up programs to block and filter material so that inappropriate content will not be filtered down.
4. Teachers evaluating sites and teaching students how to do the same.
5. Instruct students about the use of the internet.
6. Encourage and engage social networking so that communication is effective and children build a community of friends. The teacher can be part of that network.
7. Plan interactive activities for which students make use of ICT tools.
